Diving is no longer a
sport just for the young, super-fit macho male. The day's are long gone when the instructors were all ex-military macho men trying to weed out weaklings who might have jeopardised a mission.
oday the emphasis is on opening up the beautiful underwater
world to as many families as possible. Scuba equipment has improved in leaps and bounds and is really user friendly.
With PADI, the training emphasis is on performance, not time. Sometimes older people are a bit slower when it comes to learning to dive. That's no big deal - all we do is take a bit longer.
Life in Pattaya has no
age barriers. There are super restaurants, great hotels, wonderful
shopping, excursions, swim with dolphins, go snorkeling or try the
special one-day PADI course for those who have never dived before.
Don't let the
youngsters have all the fun !
Just for the record
the writer of this page started diving as a "holiday" diver at the
age of 46; retired to Thailand when he was 50 and five years later
decided he needed a new diving challenge and became an instructor.
He is now 72 years old and has retired from teaching and dives
only for fun.
